Enrichment Classes

What is Enrichment?

Enrichment classes are an opportunity for your child to learn and grow new skills, be exposed to different kind of arts and sciences, and have fun while doing it!

Enrichment Policies

Yinghua offers three terms per year of age-appropriate, after-school enrichment classes. The Aftercare office will update this page with class offerings for the new term about a week before registration begins. Parents will have one week for online registration each term. Most classes are one hour in length, and exceptions are noted in the class descriptions.

  1. FEES

    Each enrichment class comes with a fee, and as part of this fee, there is a reduced Aftercare fee of $14/day. This Aftercare service includes providing a snack to each student and supervised transitions between classes and downtime in Aftercare. During Aftercare, students can engage in crafts, board games, or play outside (weather permitting). Students who are registered for tutoring, music lessons or enrichment classes and qualify for “free lunch” will not be charged for the Aftercare portion of the billing. After the activity sessions have ended for the term the Aftercare fee will increase to a reduced amount of $10 per day charge. Students who qualify for “reduced lunches” will be charged a $10 Aftercare fee along with the class fee. After the activity sessions have ended for the term, Aftercare fees will increase back to the $14 per day charge.

  1. KINDERGARTEN

    For Kindergarten students, registration for enrichment classes and music lessons is available in Term II and III: Kindergarteners thrive when they can focus primarily on adjusting to the school-day during their first term at Yinghua. 

  1. REFUNDS

    All classes are non-refundable once registration has closed. This means that if you decide to back out of the class after the registration period closes, you will forfeit the session-long class fee. 

  1. WEATHER RELATED OR OTHER UNEXPECTED SCHOOL-CLOSED POLICY

    Any enrichment classes missed due to weather-related or other unexpected school closures may be reimbursed or made up during make up week.

  1. MAKE-UP POLICY

    If an enrichment teacher has to cancel a class due to illness, the teacher has an opportunity to make up one class during a session. There is one week reserved for this purpose at the end of any given session. If a teacher misses more than one day, families will be refunded for the class.

  1. HOMEWORK FIRST

    There is time to complete homework in Aftercare, but the designated time for the “Homework First” program is 4:15-5:15. If you want your child to finish their homework in Aftercare, avoid signing up for Enrichment classes that conflict with homework time. Unfortunately, some outside vendors only offer classes from 4:00-5:00 pm. 

  1. SILENT DISMISSAL

    On lesson days, set Silent Dismissal to “Aftercare + classes/music lessons.” By setting your student’s Silent Dismissal correctly, you will avoid extra Aftercare fees.

  1. PICKUP

     Show your current year dismissal card (the number not the QR code side) or picture ID (State Driver’s License) and sign out your child/children at Door 2. We will call your student(s) when you have signed them out. 

  1. BEHAVIOR

    Please remind your students that behavior expectations for Aftercare and Enrichment are the same as they are in the classroom. If your student is repeatedly disruptive in the Enrichment class, they will be pulled from the class without a refund.

What time do classes run?

Classes run during Aftercare hours, between 3:45 PM – 6:00 PM. For the exact duration of a class, please see the class offerings below.

How do I sign up? 

Registration is on Infinite Campus. This will allow for streamlined registration, invoicing and a myriad of other functions that help serve parents, students and staff.

Can I opt out of the Aftercare fee that’s bundled into the class price? 

No, we’ve included a reduced-rate Aftercare with every class. There is no option to take a class without being enrolled in Aftercare. We need to account for the students’ safety from the time school ends at 3:30 PM to the time when their class begins. Students can be picked up anytime, but have the option to stay as late as 6 PM on class days. 

How do I set Silent Dismissal when my student is enrolled in Enrichment? 

Set Silent Dismissal for AFTERCARE + Classes/Music Lessons on any day your child has an Enrichment class. Students check in with Aftercare, and we escort them to class. 

What happens if the minimum number of kids don’t sign up for a class? 

Sadly, we have to cancel classes that don’t reach minimum numbers. We’ll contact you via email if that happens.  

Can I cancel a class? 

You can cancel a class, however you will forfeit the class fee.                 

When do classes begin?  

Classes begin the week of September 14th and end on November 20th There are NO CLASSES on: October 9,14,15,16.

How long are classes?

Classes range in length from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. Check the Enrichment Class Details below on this page.

When and how do I pick up my kids after Enrichment classes? 

When: Students may be picked up after their enrichment classes end and before 6:00pm. 

How: Please present your current year dismissal card (the side with thre number not the QR code) and sign your child out at door 2. Once door 2 staff have your number, they will call your student to door 2 to be picked up.

What if my kids are sick, or someone else has to pick them up?  

Call the office and let us know if your kids won’t be there. If someone else is picking them up, let the office know. That person will need your child’s dismissal card or must show an ID. 

What else do I need to know?

Term 1 Enrichment Classes

7 Classes, Thursdays 5:15pm-6:00pm, Grades 1-4

We are very excited to continue to offer this Yinghua favorite! This Martial Arts class is based in traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate. The class structure will include warm-ups and stretching games and physical fitness exercises, as well as karate and self-defense fundamentals. Martial Arts can help kids develop balance, coordination, and confidence.

Gina Wood, a 2nd degree black belt with 20+ years of experience, has taught karate to Yinghua students since 2014. She blends serious training with fun, helping kids build balance, coordination, and confidence.

In Minecraft: Education Edition, students dig into the world of Minecraft and develop valuable academic skills through interactive lessons. Using the fun, familiar Minecraft game students learn Language Arts, STEM, Chemistry, Math, History, and more. Whether a student is new to Minecraft or has played before, they get lost in captivating lessons that cover a wide range of learning applications and expand beyond the classroom and into the virtual world!

In this interactive performance program, students explore the marvelous world of theater and performance arts. The course ignites a passion for creativity and self-expression as students learn to use body language, props, and the spoken word to effectively communicate narratives and emotions. Through games, activities, and lessons, students will discover a love of theater, build confidence, and develop empathy.

Back-to-school season is bursting with creativity at YR! During this session, students will explore a fascinating world of characters, patterns, texture and vibrant color. Appetites don’t stand a chance against the realistic Pizza drawing our students will create as they focus on proportion, detail, and shading techniques. Our adorable Baby Sloth will help students practice expression and character design, while our art history portrait of Hiawatha introduces cultural appreciation and portrait composition just in time to celebrate the fall season. The form taught in this class is the 24-step Yang-style short form of taijiquan, which is practiced worldwide by millions of people. Taijiquan is a type of gongfu established in the 17th century, and the Yang-style was established later in the early 19th century by Yang Luchan. While it is often thought of as an exercise for older people, it is actually very beneficial for people of all ages. The Yang-style of taijiquan is a gentle exercise that trains the body, mind, and breath to work in tandem. The result of regularly practicing taiji is a calmer mind, increased focus, better physical balance, stronger immune system, and overall healthier body.

Hi, I’m Andrew! I’ve been an instructor in taijiquan (often called “Tai Chi”) and qigong for over 10 years. I am also an interpreter, translator, and language teacher in Japanese and Mandarin. In my spare time, I like to play tabletop roleplaying games and video games, read science fiction books, and learn new things.

RETURNING!! After school traditional Chinese dance classes are back at Yinghua! Students will be exposed to and learn some basic skills of Chinese classical dance, folk dance, and ethnic dance. They will also learn a short piece of a complete dance. We hope that, through learning Chinese dances, students will improve their physical coordination, strengths, and gain more knowledge of Chinese culture, geography, and customs.

CAAM Chinese Dance Theater (CDT) is a non-profit performing arts and dance academy located in St. Paul, Minnesota.  The group is dedicated to preserving and celebrating Chinese cultural heritage. Founded in 1992, CAAM CDT is the oldest and largest Chinese Dance company in the Midwest. CAAM CDT has enjoyed remarkably stable leadership since its inception and currently serves under the artistic direction of Lili Teng, a world-renown choreographer and teacher.
